In 2015, our founder and slam poet, Rheonna Nicole had a vision. She wanted to create a space where women and girls of color could come together, unleash their creativity, and use the power of spoken word poetry to express themselves authentically without the judgment of others. With this vision in her heart, Rheonna embarked on a journey to bring her dream to life.
With unwavering determination, Rheonna founded Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam in 2015. She chose the name to represent the duality and strength of femininity - the lipstick symbolizing beauty and the wars representing the battles women face in society. Through poetry, Rheonna believed that women could reclaim their power and challenge societal norms.
Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam quickly gained recognition and support from the community. Rheonna's passion and talent as a spoken word artist attracted like-minded individuals who shared her vision. Together, they organized the first-ever poetry slam event, inviting women and girls of color to take the stage and share their poetic brilliance.
The inaugural event was a resounding success. The atmosphere was electric, filled with creativity, vulnerability, and empowerment. Participants poured their hearts out through their spoken word performances, captivating the audience with their raw emotions and powerful words. The event became a safe haven, a sanctuary where women and girls could freely express their thoughts, dreams, and challenges without judgment.
The impact of Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam extended beyond its events. Rheonna and her team actively engaged with the community, collaborating with local organizations and schools to bring poetry and self-expression to a wider audience. They organized open mic nights, inviting individuals from all walks of life to share their voices and experiences. Through partnerships and outreach programs, they inspired a new generation of poets and empowered them to use their words to enact positive change.
Year after year, Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam grew stronger, amplifying the voices of women and girls of color and creating a powerful movement of self-expression and empowerment. Rheonna's vision had become a reality, and the impact of Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam resonated far and wide.
